OVERVIEW

GREAT SOUNDING VINTAGE STYLE MIC FOR HOME STUDIO.

__

Our collaboration with Thronmax further extended when they wanted to extend their product line by adding a vintage model to the MDrill family. As a newly emerging brand in the microphone market, Thronmax had to save their investment costs but still needed to penetrate into their markets by introducing new products. Our design strategy on MDrill Dome saved them a big investment budget, while proposing a completely new looking model to their product line.

Contrary to other members of the family, namely MDrill One Pro and MDrill Zero, MDrill Dome does not feature the proprietary Vertigain technology. However, for those looking for a nice looking, vintage style microphone in their home studio, MDrill Dome is a perfect fit.

MDrill Dome became our last project with Thronmax, leaving another happy customer and three successful projects behind.

DESIGN

OLD TIME FASHION W/ NEW AGE FUNCTIONS.

__

When the project first came to us, we set an internal target to keep the investment costs as low as possible. This target required our designers to work with our engineers in close-collaboration to make sure that any new design idea will not result in uncontrollable investment budgets. In that sense, MDrill Dome emerged from the main construction of MDrill Zero, keeping the necessary structural elements but proposing the necessary changes on the parts that the users focus during their performance: “the top grille”.
The MDrill Dome features a stylish dome-shaped top cage with the traditional microphone mesh underneath. The cage is fully made of zinc-alloy with high quality polishing to bring more sparkle to the product, giving this old-school vintage look and differentiating from MDrill Zero.

The UI design follows MDrill Zero’s successful use scenario.

  • The middle point of the knobs activates the mute function, while the LED turns to red

  • Rotating the knob counter-clockwise activates the cardioid mode, increasing the gain level toward to end. The LED color turns to blue to give visual feedback

  • Rotating the knob clockwise¬† activates the omni-directional mode, increasing the gain towards the end. The LED color turns to green.
